Defenseman Brent Burns scored a tie-breaking goal early in the third period as the San Jose Sharks beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 at SAP Center.
Burns’ goal came 3:20 into the final period on a bit of a broken play. Second-line right wing Joonas Donskoi’s attempted cross-ice feed from the left circle was blocked by diving defenseman Drew Doughty in the direction of a pinching Burns.
In 11 meetings with the Kings, Burns has had seven goals and nine assists since the start of last season.
Even with that excitement, Burns knows this is just the beginning and is staying focused on the rest of the season.
“We’ve got a long way to go. It’s only the first game,” Burns said.
